Finding Sentiero degli dei (Path of the Gods), the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Goat enjoying the view

Welcome to the first and possibly only post at Forbidden Travel Tips. I tried to put some of the following information in a review on TripAdvisor but apparently they do not accept URLs (hence the Forbidden) so months later (our trip was in April 2016) I am finally getting it out there.

Two other things not exactly forbidden but not in our Italy guidebook: Salerno and the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli dei in Italian). Our guidebook suggested Sorrento which sounded boring and expensive and Naples which is also expensive and the part we saw was pretty dicey. I discovered Salerno on Pinterest.  The people were friendly, the food was delicious, and it has character but in a good way. A nice day trip from there is the Amalfi Coast but the bus trip recommended by the guidebook did not appeal to me. Again Pinterest to the rescue! Turns out there is this hike along the coast, though we did take several buses. And a boat.

Because the transportation was difficult to plan before our trip I wanted to share it here. Be sure to check with Tourist Information, your B&B hosts, and other resources that might be more current.

From Salerno we purchased SITA bus tickets to Amalfi at a tobacconist. The cashier told us where to find the bus stop. In Amalfi the Tourist Information is near the bus stop and there you can grab a map of the hike and find out when the bus to Bomerano leaves. Currently that schedule is at http://www.positano.com/en/bus-schedule?bus_route=amalfi_agerola. We had over an hour before the next bus so we wandered around Amalfi for a bit then lined up with the other hikers for the noon bus. Bomerano has a grocery near the bus stop where we picked up cheese and olives for a picnic then followed the signs and other hikers to the trail head.

The hike was spectacular, with wildflowers, breathtaking views, and goats! It is very well marked with numbers and orange spray painted trail markers. It is only about 3 miles but you will want to take your time to enjoy the scenery and to travel safely over the rocky bits.

The trail ends at the town of Nocelle. The local bus can take you to Positano. You pay the driver so bring some coins. In Positano it was nice to shed my hiking shoes and wade in the cool sea while waiting for the ferry which runs seasonally from Positano to Salerno. Schedule can currently be found here: http://www.positano.com/en/ferry-schedule?from=positano&to=salerno. It was fun to see the view from the sea and took less time than the bus so it was definitely worth it.
